What is Public Relations to You?

Hey guys! I am back and ready to talk to you about one of my favorite things, my major, Public Relations! So when I first started college, it took me forever to settle on one thing I enjoyed, that I was actually good at. My mom was my advisor and she always would say how great my communication skills are so I got to thinking about Public Relations. I was like “maybe it’s boring” and “I don’t know if that is me”, but it turns out, it was the best decision I have made in my college career.

It blows my mind that so many people ask “Wait, what is Public Relations“, or “what can you even do with that?” Umm, HELLO, YOU USE COMMUNICATION FOR NEARLY ANY JOB YOU DO, RIGHT? Public Relations and communication go hand in hand and without great communication skills, I don’t know what I would do. What has taught me this? My major, of course! So, to help anyone that needs a better understanding of what it is, I made this infographic to better explain!

A lot people think all that Public Relations professionals strictly work with “media relations.” I figured the photo I incorporated that says “what we actually do vs what people think we do was really beneficial to help understand. In PR, you have to deal with media relations, crisis communications to happen at any moment, press releases, SOCIAL MEDIA (which I’m sure 98% of you reading this blog use) event planning and so many more things. (I COULD GO ON AND ON)

You’d be surprised how many times someone will ask me what my major is and I say “Communications/PR” and they say oh, that must be easy. AND IT ABSOLUTELY GRINDS MY GEARS. You used communication for everything you do! Every day, I learn to appreciate my major more and more. I used to be so scared to present in front of people, and communicate with new people at networking events, but my classes in Public Relations have helped me overcome those nerves. THAT IS HOW AMAZING PUBLIC RELATIONS IS, Y’ALL! I’M SERIOUS! If you have any further questions about my infographic, please comment or let me know!

Political Campaign Failure….

And I am back! I hope everyone’s week is going great. I am back and ready to share with you something for class. For this assignment, we were assigned to find a successful or failed political campaign strategy. Of course, I chose to write about a failed one because it is just more fun that way! 🙂 There were a few different things I wanted to write about but I narrowed it down to the “Dewey defeats Truman” political campaign. During the 1948 presidential election, The Chicago Daily Tribune incorrectly posted news. This was the day after the election after Harry Truman had won an upset victory over Republican candidate Thomas Dewey.

This was obviously long before we had 24/7 hour news but it is still amazing how easily things can be reversed and messed up. This campaign kind of relates to the Miss Universe pageant where the winners names and 1st runner up names were misread by Steve Harvey. Here is the link if you’ve never seen it! But people can never be too sure before reading or posting something! The newspaper headline read “Dewey defeats Truman which was incorrect. Apparently, someone thought Dewey for sure had the campaign but Truman ended up winning, becoming our 33rd president of the United States. On election night, this earlier press deadline required the first post-election issue of the tribune to go to press before the East Coast states had reported many results from  polling locations.

Following the incident, the paper was held up by Truman at a public appearance following his successful election, smiling at the error. Personally, I think this talk about the newspaper only made his campaign even stronger. Because following this, I’m sure more and more people were even interested in him and to see his reaction to the mistake. This huge failure probably made his name more popular to his fans.

This is a prime example of how you need to EDIT your work and know the news and how it should be released. Don’t do things the night before because things change every minute of every hour of every day. Hope to see y’all back next week on a super interesting blog!

Kristi Deetz Interview

Hey y’all. I’m back! I am extremely excited to write this blog today… Our assignment for class involves finding a Public Relations professional and interviewing them. I chose to ask Kristi Deetz to take the time out of her day to talk with me over the phone. Kristi is from Vincennes so I was unable to meet with her in person; therefore, we talked over the phone. I expected our interview to be around 10-15 minutes but it ended up running around 27 minutes….. (oops). Kristi is the Senior Director of External Relations at Vincennes University (my former college), GO TRAILBLAZERS!

Deet’z has an associate degree in broadcasting technology and modern foreign language from Ball State. She also has her BA from Ball state in Telecommunications as well as her Master of Arts in executive development for public service. She has been in her current position at the university since 2007.

Kristi’s job includes working with individual departments and developing materials for marketing. She also meets with other college partners and prepares her days for “always on hold” for a crisis to occur. One of the main things Kristi discussed with me was a recent project her department had been working on. This was “re-branding Vincennes University.” This was super intriguing to me considering we had Chris Westfall on campus just a few weeks prior to this interview. He talked to us about branding ourselves and so did Kristi.

Another thing I was really interested in was how she keeps current in Public Relations throughout her work week. “Every year, I like to attend a couple conferences that are focused in the marketing side but include Public Relations for both higher ed and marketing in general to bring up things happening in the world,” said Deetz.  She also suggested professional conferences and reading (articles and blogs) and keeping up with what other people are doing to succeed.

Some of the tips that Kristi gave me really opened my eyes to new things as well. Her main pointer was to not sit behind a desk which is so true. You can’t get things done in the Public Relations industry behind a desk cooped up in your computer all day! You have to put yourself out there and brand yourself by networking.  It was a pleasure getting to speak with Kristi and I am thankful she took the time out of her day to help me for this assignment

Miley Cyrus’ Crisis at age 21

Hey guys! I hope you all are back to read my second blog after my first (probably not the best) one. So for this assignment for class, we have to choose an organization or a person that faced a crisis of some sort and to state how they responded. Oddly enough, the first person to pop in my head was Miley Cyrus! (whom might I add, was/IS my child hood idle, no shame by that).

In 2013, she released a few songs such as “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” that definitely got people talking. Check out the videos above if you haven’t already seen them. But why did she cut her hair and make these weird, crazy videos? BECAUSE THE PEOPLE LOVED IT. She used social media to gain followers because everyone wanted to see what she was doing. Whether it was bad reviews, or good ones, people were talking about her and that was what Cyrus was going for. She is literally a genius (okay, maybe not) but she was getting screen time and using it to her advantage. Her videos were off the charts in 2013 because of her crisis.

Following Cyrus’ crisis, at the VMA Awards in 2013, she co performed with Robin Thicke and got people talking off the charts. The infamous “Twerk around the world”. Like some of the names people come up with literally have me dead. Cyrus once again did some out of whack things on stage such as twerking with her foam finger but what happened following this? CYRUS GAINED MORE FAME THAN SHE ALREADY HAD AT THE AGE OF 21 YEARS OLD. Whether it was hate or love, she had people kissing her feet.

So all in all, Cyrus responded with loving the fame she had gained, of course. All the hate and love she got on social media, she embraced. Did she handle this and respond to this effectively? Okay, let’s be real for a moment. If you were famous and cut your hair and released these sick videos that everyone loved and shared and bought on iTunes you wouldn’t be pleased? OF COURSE, YOU WOULD. DON’T EVEN LIE! She had fans wrapped around her finger and I do not blame her. And following this crisis in 2013, Miley Cyrus will still make more money than I do my entire life in one day 🙂

4 tips to be the best blogger you can be

Hey y’all. This is my first official blog post so bare with me if it isn’t the best…. I hope you enjoy the post and it helps your blogging and also can help me improve on mine.

Tip 1: Basic writing skills

You don’t have to be freaking Stephen King people, just write and be yourself. Having the most basic skills in writing will provide you with a more comfortable writing style so people can tell you enjoy your blog you are posting!

Tip 2: BE A GOOD COMMUNICATOR

You need/use communication LITERALLY for anything you do. Any job you will have over the course of your career, you’re going to need to understand basic communication. You want to be a cop? Well, you have to talk to people. You want to be a teacher? You will need to know how to communicate with your students and coworkers. You text your boyfriend or buddy from class; you need basic communication skills to do all of these things. Communication is KEY for anything you do throughout your career.

Tip 3: Proofread or fail

When you write a paper, before turning it in, what do you do? (Or what should you do?) PROOFREAD. Your followers, those who share your blog, anyone seeing your post is going to see the small errors you make so be sure to review it. Have a buddy go over it for you but make sure it’s perfect before you push submit!!!!!!

Tip 4: Be creative

A huge advantage to becoming the best blogger you can be is to be yourself and make it creative. Do things differently than other bloggers. Make the post YOU!
